Salmorejo

Salmorejo — essentially thicker gazpacho — is just one of the Spanish specialties you’ll want to try at Mercado Victoria

Cordoba’s old quarter is flanked by an avenue lined by an oasis of gardens, pathways and palm trees. Called Paseo de la Victoria, this is where you’ll find more than just a green getaway but also Andalucia’s first gastro-market, Mercado Victoria.

The trendy market is situated in a wrought-iron, late-19th-century structure called the Caseta del Círculo de la Amistad, once used for fairs and exhibitions. It’s a looker on the outside, but altogether amazing on the inside. That’s because it’s now home to some 30 different food stands that serve up a range of delectable cuisine, ranging from typical Spanish products such as cheese, jamón and wine, to prepared plates including gazpacho, octopus, and even international flavors from places like Japan, Argentina and Italy.

Not only is this a great place to taste some of the most acclaimed regional, national and even international flavors around, but it’s an experience unto itself in terms of ambiance. Open all day, the market is a local hotspot, filling with people and music late into the night. Even better, it makes for a great daytime escape during hot Cordoban summer days. Your only challenge will be finding a place to sit among the throngs of hungry and social Spaniards.

Getting to the market is pretty easy given that it’s just a short walk from the Grand Mezquita. If you don’t happen to be close by, though – or if you intend to cover more ground – then you can easily make a stop at Mercado Victoria while on a Cordoba hop-on, hop-off bus tour. It is also located just beyond the city’s famous Jewish Quarter, which you can get to know on a Cordoba walking tour.
